Training

There are a large number of online and instructor-led courses available for Cub Scout leaders. Some of these courses are required of trained leaders while others are optional.

It is strongly recommended that all adults, not just Registered Adult leaders, take the BSA Youth Protection Training available online at myscouting.org (you will need to create an account, if you don’t already have one).

What Makes a Trained Leader?

A trained leader must be a Registered Adult.

There are four courses that a trained leader must take. All of these are available at myscouting.org (you will need to create an account if you don’t already have one).

  • Leader Specific Training for your position

Leader Specific Training is also offered in an instructor-lead format. These instructor-lead corses are typically offered twice a year in the fall (September or October) and spring (April or May).

It is also recommended that adult leaders complete BALOO training (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation), preferably in its OLS (Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leadersg) form. This training is required for Webelos Den Leaders. The pack also needs to have a number of BALOO trained adults in order to conduct outdoor activities.
